Colombian Creole horse breeds: same origin but different diversity Genet. Mol. Biol.

In order to understand the genetic ancestry and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity of current Colombian horse breeds we sequenced a 364-bp fragment of the mitocondrial DNA D-loop in 116 animals belonging to five Spanish horse breeds and the Colombian Paso Fino and Colombian Creole cattle horse breeds. Among Colombian horse breeds, haplogroup D had the highest frequency (53%), followed by haplogroups A (19%), C (8%) and F (6%). The higher frequency of haplogroup D in Colombian horse breeds supports the theory of an ancestral Iberian origin for these breeds. These results also indicate that different selective pressures among the Colombian breeds could explain the relatively higher genetic diversity found in the Colombian Creole cattle horse when compared...

CONFIRMACIÓN DE LA PRESENCIA DE OPHICHTHUS CYLINDROIDEUS (RANZANI) (ANGUILLIFORMES: OPHICHTHIDAE) EN EL CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones

Two specimens, 565 and 715 mm total length (TL), of the dusky snake eel, Ophichthus cylindroideus, collected southwest of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean, were examined. This species was not reported by Acero and Garzón-Ferreira (1995), then it is was not listed in the Colombian marine fishes data bases. However, McCosker et al. (1989) did examine one specimen (USNM 94755, 622 mm TL) from Puerto Colombia. External morphological and morphometric data are compared, as well as some osteology features.

This paper reports Pilumnus pannosus Rathbun, a member of the family Pilumnidae, for the first time from the Colombian Caribbean. This report is based on specimens collected on the continental shelf of the Guajira Peninsula, where the species was found associated with seagrass meadows of Thalassia testudinum.
